What is PuTTY?

PuTTY is a common client application for SSH, Telnet and Rlogin network protocols used to run a remote session over a network. This provides a means to connect to a server remotely via SSH and supplies a terminal for command line administration of the server. PuTTY is not an application created or provided by 1&1 but is available for download free of charge.

For example, one can run PuTTY on a Windows machine and tell it to connect to a Linux machine. PuTTY opens a window. Anything typed into that window is sent straight to the Linux machine, and everything the Linux machine sends back is displayed in the PuTTY window. This allows work to be done on the Linux machine as if you were sitting at its console, while actually sitting somewhere else.

You can download PuTTY from your Control Panel by clicking the Administration tab and then the Downloads link.
